Just when the music world didn't think TVXQ! -- one of the most celebrated and accomplished K-pop artists of all time -- can possibly do or achieve any more than they already have, the boy band broke their own record.
Closing out their latest Begin Again tour with three sold-out dates at Nissan Stadium, with its seating capacity of 75,000, the Yokohama, Japan concerts were added as the grand finale shows to the initial, 17-date trek that ran from November 2017 to January 2018. The multiple day spectacle (from June 8-11) led them to become the first international artist in Japan to bring one million people to a single tour in the country, as well as the only K-pop act to have played three consecutive days at the massive stadium. This smashed their previous record set during its 2013 Time tour, which saw a total attendance of 840,000 people, of having the most-attended and highest-grossing K-pop concert in Japan.
Since their rise in the early '00s, TVXQ! have been breaking records in K-pop for nearly 15 years and aren't showing signs of slowing down with the group's determination on full display at the shows. In the presence of thousands of diehard fans who came from all across Asia despite the rainy forecast, TVXQ! reminded everyone why they are considered the best live performers of K-pop and have kept such loyal fans across the world. From the flawless opening notes of 2017 single "Reboot," all the way to the encore track "Somebody To Love," the 24-song set lasted for nearly for four soaking hours but kept the audience rapt in attention.
The retrospective of their near-15-year career included highlights like Yunho's intoxicating performance of his solo single "Drop," Changmin's pitch-perfect rendition of X Japan's famous rock ballad "Forever Love," with the standout moment coming via the duo performing a string of the band's breakout hits, including "Purple Line" "Rising Sun," and “Begin- Again Version,” which made it hard to believe TVXQ! was once a five-member group.
Over the sea of red, T-shaped glow sticks, what the duo managed to pull off during the three-day event was not just impressive --- it was a power play to further show K-pop as a cultural tour-de-force. Yet still, this particularly imperial moment likely will not be able to be topped by any K-pop artist for a long time coming to confirm TVXQ's truly legendary status.

K-Pop Duo TVXQ! Becomes Best-Selling Foreign Touring Act in Japan

Korean boy band TVXQ! have once again lived up to the meaning of their name: the “Rising Gods of the East” made history last week when the final shows of their Begin Againtour helped the concert series surpass the milestone of 1 million tickets sold. They’re the first foreign act to ever sell that many tickets during a single Japanese tour.
The Begin Again Japanese dome tour began at the Sapporo Dome on Nov. 11 of last year and concluded with three shows at Yokohama's Nissan Stadium, held on June 8-10. During that 13-month period, the pair performed 17 shows. It was their first Japanese tour by the duo, which features Jung “U-Know” Yunho and Shim “Max” Changmin, since they returned from fulfilling their obligatory service in South Korea’s military; each was discharged in 2017. They released their first album in three years in March, the 11-track LP New Chapter #1: The Chance of Love.
Known as Tohoshinki in Japan, TVXQ! rose to prominence to become one of the most popular teams in Japan in the mid-00s. The then-five member group broke numerous records, and become the first Korean male act to top the weekly Oricon chart, the Japanese equivalent of the U.S. Billboard singles chart, with their single “Purple Line” in 2008. Since then, TVXQ! has become a mainstay in the Japan, the world’s second-largest music market. Their success, along with that of other Korean acts like BoA, Kara, Girls’ Generation and BIGBANG, made way for many K-pop artists to push into the Japanese music industry.
TVXQ!’s latest record-breaking tour outsold their 2013 Time concert series, reports Billboard, which saw 840,000 concertgoers in attendance. The last Korean act to come close to seeing 1 million ticket sales was BIGBANG, whose Japanese leg of their 2015-2016 MADE tour saw over 911,000 concertgoers in attendance.
The group largely came to become entrenched as a mainstay in Japan's music scene by spending a dedicated amount of time on the country; both U-Know and Max speak Japanese fluently. They've released and promoted locally, through events like concerts, fanmeets and televised appearances, over 50 singles in Japan, far exceeding the 20-odd (depending on the count) that they have released in South Korea. By 2014 they were recognized as the best-selling foreign act in regards to singles sales. They're so popular in Japan that they even have a distinct fanbase there: while TVXQ!'s fans worldwide are known as "Cassiopeia," or "Cassie(s)" for short, in Japan they're known uniquely as "BigEast."
The high ticket sales during the Begin Again tour reaffirmed TVXQ!’s place as one of the most popular foreign acts in Japan following their hiatus while the members served in South Korea's military. It came amid renewed interest in K-pop in Japan. Over the past few months, acts like TWICE, BTS and EXO have proven immensely popular, and many other top Korean groups, such as Red Velvet, GFriend, and Seventeen, recently released or are about to drop their first Japanese albums. But as well as they are all doing, it will likely be a while before TVXQ!’s record is broken: it’s taken the act 15 years to achieve this monumental feat at bringing a foreign act to such heights in Japan, and it's unlikely to be surpassed anytime soon.

Since this is an outdoor scene, the work was very hard, nervous, uneasy, but I have never felt such a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction. I'm very glad that I was at the Nissan stadium at the time when the history was going on.
Among all the problems of concerts in the open air the worst is rain. Even if you carefully cover everything and watch everything, the scenery becomes wet, there are malfunctions in the electrical systems of the scene mechanisms. Can such a performance go without incidents and injuries?
But we have an amazing team! A week before the performance, they checked every detail from morning till night, set up. In the rain, everything is dozens of times more complicated. You get soaked even in a raincoat.

Dispatch Estimates TVXQ! Made A Quarter Of A Billion Dollars From Their Latest Tour
TVXQ! made an estimated $110 million USD in ticket sales from this single tour!
TVXQ! has achieved record sales through their recent “Begin Again” tour in Japan.
The “Begin Again” tour was held from November 11, 2017 to June 10, 2018 and toured numerous cities in Japan including Sapporo, Tokyo, Fukuoka, Osaka, Nagoya and Yokohama.
TVXQ! finished their tour in Yokohama, where they held a concert for 3 days. Records showed that they accumulated ticket sales up to $24 million USD in total (that’s just for the 3 concerts in Yokohama)! Their merchandise sales in Yokohama also added up to an impressive amount of about $26 million USD.
Combining both ticket sales and merchandise sales, TVXQ! had earned around $50 million USD in just 3 days.
The complete tour sold about 1,010,000 seats in total, with 220,000 seats being sold in Yokohama. That means TVXQ! made an estimated amount of $110 million USD throughout the entire tour, just from the ticket sales!
