    2015 Summer Universiade

Key Facts on the 2015 Summer Universiade
    28th Summer Universiade 2015

A relatively small city in Asia with unknown treasures, Gwangju is getting ready to reach out to the young people of the world. The concept of the 2015 Gwangju Universiade is 'EPIC'. EPIC symbolises Gwangju's special history as well as its dedication to the Universiade. Standing for 'Eco-friendliness, Peace, IT and Culture', EPIC strives for great epic poetry filled with striking impressions and fervent passion.
These four visions are the principal concepts of the Universiade.

    Ecoversiade… for sustainable development
An indispensable aspect of modern-day sporting events is the preservation of the environment. The Gwangju Universiade has formulated a strategy that combines the reduction of costs and the preservation of the environment by minimising the number of new constructions.
Out of the 77 competition venues (42 competition venues, 35 training venues) needed during the Universiade, 97.4% will be refurbished. The competition venues for swimming and gymnastics have not met the international standards and therefore they will be the only ones newly built. The first strategy in the preparation of the Gwangju Universiade is to minimise the financial burden while enhancing economic efficiency through the implementation of eco-friendly and sustainable methods.

Peaceversiade… declaring the values of democracy, human rights and peace in the world
Gwangju is a historic city that advanced Korea’s democratisation process through the Democratisation Movement of May 18th, 1980. The spirit of Gwangju's citizens dedicated to democracy, human rights and peace, who rose up against dictatorship, has become a model of democracy in Asia.

ITversiade… a ubiquitous sporting event enjoyed anytime, anywhere
The Gwangju Universiade will be the most efficient sporting event in terms of IT equipment since it will use the cutting-edge telecommunication technology of the Republic of Korea and the state-of-the-art photonics representing Gwangju. Details on the course of the Universiade, including the schedule and results of sports events as well as the management and information on the Universiade, will be integrated so as to be organically linked to the Internet interface and mobile information management system. The Total Integration Management System (TIMS) will be put in place, enabling service anytime, anywhere and from any device.

Cultureversiade… a feast of global culture unfolded in the cultural city of Asia
Korea’s representative city of art, Gwangju has welcome quite a number of renowned artists. Held since 1995 with the vision of passing on the tradition of art, the Gwangju Biennale is considered one of the world’s three major biennales. With the opening of the Asian Culture Complex in 2014, Gwangju is poised to take a quantum leap forward as the cultural hub of the world. The 2015 Gwangju Universiade will become a sports and cultural festival for university students worldwide. It will offer them the opportunity to experience the diverse culture and art of Korea, and share and enjoy the diverse culture of the world by integrating the cultural contents of the Asian Culture Complex. The Gwangju Universiade will become a cultural Universiade that is rich in culture and filled with more artistic enjoyment than any other sporting event staged to date.

Gwangju Opening Ceremony: where Korean Tradition meets Pop Culture

    04 June 2015

    GWANGJU -
The Gwangju Universiade Organizing Committee (GUOC) held an official event at the Plaza Hotel in Seoul on 3 June, introducing the overall plans for the Universiade's opening and closing ceremonies.

The event was attended by the GUOC President Kim Hwang-sik, the ceremonies' director Park Myung-sung, the Universiade's ambassadors and others.

The GUOC President Kim Hwang-sik said that the committee would try its best to make the Universiade an event where Jeolla Provinces' unique features and global culture would be perfectly mixed together.

The opening and closing ceremonies will have Korean celebrities representing Korea's tradition and pop culture, including actor Joo Won, singer U-know Yunho of the duo TVXQ, popera singer Lim Hyung-joo and many more.

The two ceremonies will proceed under the Universiade's slogan of "Light Up Tomorrow," and the sub-themes of the opening and closing ceremonies are "U are Shining" and "Sharing the Light," respectively.

The opening ceremony, taking place on 3 July at the Universiade's Main Stadium, will introduce Korean contemporary culture to young athletes from around the world. The Korean alphabet of Hangul will be briefly introduced and the Universiade's key messages of "Life" and "Love" will be delivered to the participating athletes and officials with Korean traditional music.

The closing ceremony on 14 July will embrace the student-athletes’ passion, challenge and hope and illustrate them into a story. The athletes, officials and volunteers will all come together to enjoy the last moment of the Universiade.

The GUOC started the preparations for the opening and closing ceremonies as early as May, and it now plans to hold a series of mock ceremonies up until the Universiade.

The ceremony director Park Myung-sung said the opening and closing ceremonies will embody Korea's beautiful tradition along with its modern popular culture.

Tickets for the ceremonies are available at http://ticket.gwangju2015.com or at the call center by dialing 1644-9446 or 1544-1555 (in Korea).

Gwangju 2015 have announced the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Summer Universiade will feature a blend of South Korea’s traditions and pop culture, after revealing their plans at an official event at Plaza Hotel in Seoul.

Both ceremonies will centre around Gwangju 2015’s central slogan of “Light Up Tomorrow” but the Opening Ceremony, due to take place in the Universiade's Main Stadium on July 3, will have the sub-theme of “U are Shining”.

The Ceremony is set to introduce South Korean contemporary culture for young athletes from across the world, with the alphabet of Hangui set to be introduced, as well focusing on the Universiade's key messages of "Life" and "Love".

Meanwhile the Closing Ceremony on July 14 will focus on the student athletes’ hope and challenges in addition to their passion for sport, as alongside the officials and volunteers they enjoy the final moments of the Universiade.

With 30 days to go until the South Korean city welcomes the 20,000 participants and officials for the 11 day event, Gwangju 2015 are making final preparations for their arrival at either Incheon International Airport, Gimpo International Airport, Muan International Airport and Gwangju Airport, by setting up information desks.

To help ensure athletes feel welcome and perform to their best Gwangju 2015 will be putting in place a fast-track immigration system, will providing transportation to venues and as well as staging cultural events throughout the Universiade.

Gwangju 2015 have also been making final preparations for the visting delegations from across the world ©Gwangju 2015

“With only 30 days until the grand opening ceremony, we are making sure that all of our preparations are on point before the athletes arrive in Gwangju," said Gwangju 2015 secretary general Kim Yun-suk.

While the last-minute fine tuning is taking place in the country, the Japanese delegation led by former speed skater Yukinori Miyabe visited Gwangju to view preparations including transportation, media registration and Athletes Village.

Around 600 athletes and officials from 40 different countries are expected to be staying in the Athletes Village in Chungju from June 30 to July 9, which is due to open on June 26.

FULL GWANGJU SUPPORT FOR 2015 UNIVERSIADE

The city of Gwangju will host the 28th Summer Universiade from July 3rd to the 14th, gathering together more than 12,000 university athletes from 170 countries.

[IMG]The Universiade, billed as the largest multi-sport event after the Olympics, will benefit from the Korean City of Light’s extensive services and infrastructure, much of which has been newly-created for this event since it was awarded the hosting rights in 2009.

The Universiade, derived from “University” and “Olympiade”, is an international sporting event organized by FISU (International University Sports Federation). The athletes will be competing in 21 sports for 272 gold medals in Gwangju and across the Jeollanam-do, Jeollabuk-do and Chungcheongbuk-do provinces.

The opening and closing ceremonies will be attended by Korean celebrities representing Korea’s traditional and pop culture, including actor Joo Won, singer Yunho of Kpop duo TVXQ, popera singer Lim Hyung-joo, and many more. The sub-themes of the opening and closing ceremonies are “U are Shining” and “Sharing the Light,” respectively, and they will proceed under the Universiade’s slogan of “Light Up Tomorrow”.

    -omitted unrealated pic-

The 2015 Gwangju Universiade will also benefit from a wide variety of venues across the region, most notably including the Kimdaejung Convention Center, the sole exhibition and convention center in Jeolla-do Province. The convention center offers 40,046 m2 of floor space and will be used for fencing during the Universiade. Only 4 out of the 69 facilities that will be used during the games are newly constructed, while the other 65 existing venues are renovated.

New venues include the Nambu University International Aquatics Center, which will receive a Green Building Certification for using geothermal heat as the main source of energy, and the Kwangju Women’s University Universiade Gymnasium, which will be rated the highest energy-efficiency level by the Korea Energy Management Corporation for consuming 26% of its energy from renewable energy. Due to its minimization of new construction and the low carbon footprint, the event is also being referred to as the “Ecoversiade”.

Corporate sponsors include SK Telecom, KIA, Asiana Airlines, Samsung, Hyundai Engineering & Construction, and CJ E&M.

The 2015 Gwangju Universiade will be considered as a stage offering a glimpse at the stars of the upcoming 2016 Rio Olympics, as 154 medalists in the Universiade won 174 medals in the 2012 London Olympics. 48% of Olympic medalists are also Universiade medalists, and Universiade records in most sports surpass those of the Asian Games.

Tickets are available for purchase at Interpark. For more information, visit the official website of the 2015 Gwangju Summer Universiade.

For those interested in hosting a sporting event in Gwangju at one of the many facilities hosting the Universiade, please visit Korea MICE Bureau or email mice@knto.or.kr.
