[trans] "International Market" Director, Casting U-Know Yunho in the role of Nam Jin.. Satisfied with all his qualities"

Director Yoon Jae Gyun has revealed his reasons for casting group TVXQ's Jung Yunho (U-Know Yunho) in the role of Nam Jin.

At the media distribution preview cum press conference for movie "International Market" held in the afternoon on 24 November, Director Yoon Jae Gyun said, "Jung Yunho was well-equipped with all qualities".

He explained, "In relation to Jung Yunho's casting, because I wanted to make the movie realistically in my own way, because Nam Jin ssi is a singer, I thought that it would be good if one of the singers took on the role. In addition, in reality, if one were to take on the role of Nam Jin sunbaenim, because he is the representative singer of Jeolla-do, I thought that it would be good if it were someone who is able to perfectly grasp the Jeolla-do satoori (dialect), so I looked for a list (of those people who would be a good fit)."

Following that, he conveyed, "Jung Yunho's hometown was Gwangju and after meeting him and speaking with him, I thought that he was the most suitable actor in all aspects with regard to his respect for Nam Jin, and his passion for the role, and the perfection of his satoori (dialect)".

[trans] A movie critic's review of "International Market" - Yunho reference-

only Yunho-related parts have been translated-

"There is a scene where the female reporters gave off exclamations, and that is precisely the scene when Nam Jim appears. This is because Nam Jin is acted out by U-Know Yunho. The fact that the synchronisation between Nam Jin and U-Know Yunho did not feel out of place is because both of them share a common point of being the idols of the 1970s and the 21st century respectively.
It is not an exaggeration to see "International Market", which combines the narrative (of the movie) which is capable of embracing the relatability / sensitivity of the middle-aged group and the acting of Hwang Jung Min and U-Know Yunho, as a rising star movie which will become a reliable lookout to prevent the onslaught of the Hollywood movies raiding the Korean movie industry.

[trans] Background and review of Yunho's role in "International Market"

*This article compiles a "manual" for watching "International Market" to help movie-goers understand the background of the historical events depicted in the movie.

◆"Together With You" (the title of the classic song by Nam Jin which Yunho sings in the movie)

We hope that viewers will not confuse this with the virtual marriage programme broadcast on a cable channel recently (there is a jTBC programme with the same title). "Together With You" is a song released in 1972 by singer Nam Jin after he was discharged from the army, where he had enlisted in the Blue Dragon troops in 1968 and taken part in the Vietnam War. It is also a hit song which swept the 1970s and was elevated to the status of the citizens' favourite song. "International Market" depicts the appearance of Deok Soo, who had left for Vietnam during the height of the war in order to sell military-required commodities, together with the appearance of "Powell Soldier" (the article spells it as "Powell" but I'm thinking the article probably means "Power"?) Nam Jin, who had in reality narrowly overcome near-death moments numerous times in the war. TVXQ's Jung Yunho made a surprise appearance in the role of young Nam Jin and unveiled his realistic local Jeolla-do dialect acting. Director Yoon Jae Gyun explained that Jung Yunho, a real-life popular singer who was born in Gwangju and is therefore able to proficiently grasp the native Jeolla-do dialect and who possesses overflowing passion, was just the perfect person for the role.

U-Know Yunho, Big Screen Debut in "International Market"... Surprise Appearance in the Role of Nam Jin

TVXQ's Jung Yunho (U-Know Yunho) has gathered attention after he made a surprise appearance in "International Market" (Director Yoon Jae Gyun, produced by JK Films) through the role of Nam Jin.

Through the media preview held at Wangsimni CGV in Seoul on 24 November, "International Market" unveiled itself as one of the most anticipated productions during this year's end-of-year period. Jung Yunho took on the role of singer Nam Jin, who had participated in the Vietnam War, and attracted attention after he made a surprise appearance without any prior preview (of his appearance). While being an idol singer, he has also been expanding his realm of activities as an actor through dramas and this is his first official appearance in a Korean movie in the capacity of Jung Yunho.

In "International Market", Jung Yunho naturally and effortlessly acted out the role of top singer Nam Jin, who enjoyed popularity as a singer in the 1970s and had been dispatched to take part in the Vietnam War as part of the navy, and added unique fun to the movie. Although it is a short appearance, it is a role which is definitely needed for the development of the plot. While humming the song "Together With You" (one of Nam Jin ssi's classic representative songs), he unveiled and showed even his beautiful Jeolla-do satoori (dialect).

-movie details omitted- The movie opens on 17 December.

[trans] "International Market" Jung Yunho's Acting As Nam Jin, Has it been so realistic before?

TVXQ member cum actor Jung Yunho has attracted attention with his realistic earthy Jeolla-do dialect acting. In particular, while displaying steady acting alongside his seniors Hwang Jung Min and Oh Dal Soo, he also showed off outstanding chemistry with him.

The media preview for "International Market" was held on 24 November at the Sungdong-gu CGV Wangsimni CGV in Seoul. In the movie which unveiled itself on this day, the passionate acting of Hwang Jung Min, Kim Yoon Jin, Oh Dal Soo, Jang Young Nam etc shone through. Hwang Jung Min and Kim Yoon Jin personally digested their roles from their 20s till being elderly in their 70s, and displayed their meticulous acting skills.

"International Market" is a movie which portrays the life stories of the people who had survived from after the 6.25 War todate while moving through Korea's moden history. Through the stories of one man who had quietly endured the difficult times with his name as "Father", this movie presents a heartwarming touching story.

In the movie, in the scene where Deok Soo (Hwang Jung Min) leaves for Vietnam in order to raise the funds for his younger sibling's marriage, Jung Yunho made a surprise appearance. Jung Yunho took on the role of Nam Jin, who is both a soldier who took part in the Vietnam War and a singer. In reality, Nam Jin had been dispatched to the Vietnam War as part of the unit affliated with the Blue Dragon troops.

Jung Yunho added to the vitality of the movie with his perfect Jeolla-do dialect and his unabashed facial expression acting. In particular, he expressed Nam Jin's unique speaking tone well and evoked laughter from the viewers. This is a review which says that his acting experience in the past has shone through in the movie this time around.

Director Yoon Jae Gyun revealed his reasons for casting Jung Yunho, "Seeing that I wanted to create a movie which possesses realism, I came to cast Jung Yunho. Seeing how Teacher Nam Jin is Jeolla-do's representative singer, (the actor portraying him) needed to perfectly grasp the Jeolla-do dialect and I picked a list from real-life singers. After meeting Jung Yunho and speaking with him, he was the most suitable actor in all aspects with his respect towards Teacher Nam Jin, his passion towards the role and the perfectness of his dialect.

Meanwhile, "International Market" opens on 17 December.

[trans] "International Market" Director Yoon Je Kyun, "Nam Jin Role's U-Know Yunho, A Casting which is irreplaceable"

Film "International Market"'s director Yoon Je Kyun has revealed his satisfaction on the casting of Jung Yunho (U-Know Yunho, TVXQ).

In the interview with OSEN on 1 December, while smiling, Director Yoon Je Kyun commented on Jung Yunho, who had been attracting attention, "I was so (extremely) satisfied".

Director Yoon started by saying, "I agonized a lot over the casting of the actor for the role of Nam Jin. This is because Teacher Nam Jin is the legend of Jeolla-do."

He continued, "The criteria / standard for the casting was, all things considered, first and foremost that it would be great if it was a singer, and I thought that it would be great if it were someone who is able to perfect the Jeolla-do dialect. A list of famous singers came to me, and the most number of people said that Jung Yunho was the best."

In addition, he did not scrimp on his compliments (for Yunho), "Therefore, I met with him first, and compared to anything else, him as a person was really great. While conversing with him, I ended up knowing the person Jung Yunho and liking him within the span of 30 minutes - 1 hour. Because he is an idol so it was not as if I had no prejudice about that, but he was 180 degrees different from what I had expected / thought. In addition, he spoke about his own father, and while speaking about Teacher Nam Jin, he showed his respect and passion as someone originating from Gwangju, Jeolla-do, and it was really great."

He added with his comments on the casting process which was carried out with lightning speed after liking Jung Yunho, "With his respect towards Teacher Nam Jin, that passion that he is able to do well if he acts out the role was great. He (Yunho) was a friend who fitted all the conditions I had in mind perfectly. There were also other candidates (for the role), but after meeting with Jung Yunho, I cancelled all the other candidates."

Further, on Jung Yunho, he once again conveyed his "special praise", "He is really kind-hearted, and as a person, although he is a young friend, to put it in one phrase, he was upright. When acting, he also put in all his passion. Even if I had "okayed" (the scene), he would ask, "Can't I do it once more?" The senior actors were all present, so it is not easy to be like that. He was really surprising. To put it in one phrase, he was really great."

Film director praises Yunho’s passion for acting

Director Yoo Jae-kyun (OSEN) and Yunho (S.M. Entertainment)

Yoon Jae-kyun, director for the upcoming movie “Ode to My Father,” complimented singer-actor Yunho’s passion for acting.

“I was deeply satisfied for having Yunho in a cameo appearance in the movie,” Yoon said during an interview with an entertainment news outlet early this week.

In the film, Yunho makes a short appearance by playing the role of an actual singer Nam Jin who was famous in the 1970s.

“I had a lot of trouble in casting for the role of Nam Jin, as he is a legendary singer from Jeolla province. Thus, I wanted the part to go to a singer who speaks perfect Jeolla province dialect like Nam. When I was handed a list of famous singers, many people recommended Yunho,” Yoon said.

    Singer-actor Yunho (OSEN)

“When I met Yunho and conversed with him, I instantly began to like him as a person. He had a passion for acting the part of Nam Jin and the honor he has for the senior singer was impressive. He was also from Jeolla province, naturally capable of its dialect,” the director added.

“Seeing his devotion for acting and good personality, I learned that he is perfect for the part in every way. After meeting with him, I canceled the remaining candidates, because I already found the person I was looking for,” Yoon said.

Yoon also expressed great satisfaction with the outcome, sharing his stories during the filming of the movie.

“He is such a kind and nice person, despite being so young. Even though I cleared the shot saying his acting was good enough, he wanted to try the shot again for perfection. I was so surprised by his diligence and passion for acting,” Yoon said.
