[Trans] [Star Column - TVXQ] 1st part. ‘For the cheers on that day’

The presence that flutters numerous girl fans’ hearts with just their name. Them who are facing 10 year anniversary since debut, a rare sight for an idol group. That’s right. This is the story of Uknow Yunho - Max Changmin of TVXQ.

However, the image that was shown to the public so far of Uknow Yunho and Max Changmin was just celebrities, nothing more and nothing less. We wish to meet the persons Jung Yunho and Shim Changmin through this star column, about how they live with what thoughts on stage or on site. We seek to find new meaning by seeing the world through their feelings and thoughts, rather than as the audience or the media.

The 1st part will introduce the preparation stages of ’TVXQ! LIVE WORLD TOUR-Catch Me in SEOUL’, world tour to be held in Seoul Olympic Park Gymnastics Stadium on two days of November 17th and 18th. Getting a glimpse of their - them who are seeking to step out to a new world again - world through the camera lens.

Hello. This is Uknow Yunho from TVXQ. It’s a little awkard to say hello in writing like this! As we will tell you our story with pictures from now, please enjoy with us ^^. Okay, so the first picture is! Me in practise for the World Tour. As the world tour is fast approaching, practicing for the new songs to show on stage. Isn’t it really great? But I am bare faced! Don’t try to look at it in too close detail because of that though. haha. For detailed monitoring, I’m singing in the recording room. As ballad songs are usually shown on concert stages rather than on tv, monitoring is a must when we practice them. As it has been 4 years, there are more things to prepare and more pressure as well. As it was extremely busy to prepare the concert while promoting ‘Catch Me’(we) are still

diligently recording and monitoring. As there are parts that I don’t like, I should sing it again. Practice once more for a better stage! As we are meeting everyone with a concert in 4 years, I can’t help to feel that hundreds of practices are still not enough. As we are preparing very hard, please await for our stage excitedly! Oh yeah, and are you allowed to be disappointed at seeing just my back or no?

Ah! It’s my turn now. Hello. This is Max Changmin from TVXQ! Has everyone been well so far? The weather’s pretty cold. Careful not to catch cold~ hmm hmm The intro was rather long. ^^ My first picture is also a singing picture just like Yunho hyung. Can you see? Me recording with all my emotions! If I had known that the manager hyung would take pictures, I would’ve put in care about my expressions as well. Fortunately my face was covered with mic. (laughs) The ballad songs that we will showcase on concert stages for the first time makes us care more about the live performance. As the audience is feeling the charm and emotions the live performance - and not the CD or the digital version - gives for the first time at the concert, I think I should practice once more as well.

The duo TVXQ has finally appeared together. Da-dam~ this is the practice room. There are so much choreography to memorize for the concert T_T Even if it’s a choreography already showcased, as the songs are newly arranged there are added moves and sometimes there are newly edited choreography depending on stage traffic, so there are things to practice piling after another! As we are tired from pulling through a hard schedule of practicing until about 4 a.m., we cheer up again as it is a concert that we waited for like no one else.

Us, and Hwang Sanghoon hyung who’s the choreography director (the black pants in the picture… hyung I’m sorry!) are all getting tired ~ On some days we practice all night and go straight to screen shooting place. TVXQ! is practicing 24/7. Anyways, it really is practice room bare face revelation.^^ You can’t tell that we’re bare faced? So we really are masters of porecelain-like skin? Hu-hu..

A picture manager hyung took while practicing. I like it because I personally think I look pretty natural in this one. I made this cute (?) face after always making charismatic faces on stage. How do you like it? I’m a pretty soft guy in my own way. The grey trainer pants is a service! ^^ I was tired, but taking pictures and all made my energy go Up suddenly!

Checking the choreography again after a short break. Do we look great in trainers? Being as comfortable as possible increases our concentration and all during practice. Checking each facial expression to make it look as cool as possible~ Oh yeah, the thing Changmin is holding on to is a phone! A magical situation where whatever we hold becomes a mic like this! I’m also holding onto a fake mic. But don’t we look as serious as ever? ^^ Practice like it’s the real thing, Do the real thing like it’s a practice! Aja! Aja!

It’s the day of shooting the concert screens. I’m filming on my own without Yunho hyung today~ and who will be my partner? Please check at the concert. Are you really curiuos? If you are, 500 won!^^ Took one picture while waiting. Although I don’t seem to have much energy because I couldn’t sleep much, the actual shooting went well. Please await for the videos in which we’ll appear, in the concert as well~ We put much care and under various concepts when we shot them. Anyways, standing in front of the camera alone, it’s kind of awkward and I miss the empty space of Yunho hyung. Hyung~ come back~ dongseng’s waiting~

Go away trainers! Revealing ‘Catch Me’ Music Video shooting place pictures in addition. Is it coming out alright? I look very serious. To be honest, I didn’t even know they were taking pictures. As there was a long break for this comeback, super concentration mode when shooting the music video.^^ The face is a little tense with a bit of nervousness. The outfits are also intense, probably because I had to work a powerful performance!

Me fixing my hair. It’s already 3 days into shooting. As the performance for‘Catch Me’is so powerful, dancing it once makes me exhausted. But I don’t know how many times I’ve dance to it^^; However, since it needs to come out better, fixing the hair and checking the outfit as well~ all the staffs are also pulling all-nighters for days. I would like to thank everyone who’s suffering because of us again here. As I know their effort, I try to become Changmin who always smiles even if I’m tired.

One picture from the performance shooting. Seeing the still-cut the dancer hyung-nims high technical poses can be seen better. Dancer hyung-nims, you all worked so hard for the ‘Catch Me’performance! Hyungnims are the best dancers! As they have worked with us for a long time, we remember shooting with lots of fun. Whenever we were tired we cheered for each other to safely finish the shooting. We send our applause to hyung-nims who really worked hard. clapclapclap~

Discussing the choreography with a dancer hyung. What is so fun? I’m grinning even in my own eyes. I think the dancer hyung is also infected by my smile! Although our bodies suffered, I don’t think laughter stopped at the shooting. The quietly seeping laughter was a big tonic for me. ^^ I’m sure Yunho-hyung felt the same too. Haha.

Changing outfits again, setting the hairs again, and resuming the shooting. Although everyone look so tired from the repetitive shooting, I remember all of us shooting diligently in thought of meeting everyone with a new song. Although dancer-hyungs and I look tired, Changmin can afford to smile. I am once again surprised at maknae’s stamina. Smiling in that situation! I’m proud of you my dongseng!

A personal favourite. I think they took it while we’re shooting the music video~ hmm. Although shooting for music video is difficult, we approach it with more passion as it is a content through which we can show our new music and performance first. Thinking, how will the mass media receive this? With all these, we will come meet you soon.^^

[Trans] Review <Ten Asia> Kang MyungSeok Editor’s Our attitude in response to [Catch Me]

TVXQ is coming back to Korea. TVXQ is expected to charm the global fans who awaited TVXQ’s new music and stage by releasing new album [Catch Me] and starting promotional activities. Specifically, this is a long-waited new album since “Keep Your Head Down” released in January of 2011, and we can meet TVXQ’s various charms and music colours.

The new album’s title song “Catch Me” is a dance track where colourful orchestra tune with trendy Dutch electronic sound, dubstep strongly prompting the ears, and the melody line all combine in a new way. As TVXQ has gathered attention with above-par performances in every stage, they have prepared charisma, disciplined choreography, and powerful stage with a story to gather the ears and eyes of global fans with a perfect stage of music, visual, and performance.

TVXQ’s new album [Catch Me] Before U Go, prepared by SMTOWN SPECIAL~

Review I <Ten Asia> Kang MyungSeok Editor’s Our attitude in response to [Catch Me]

Some people may be born with “SM genes”. The gene to like SM Entertainment’s singers. Of course this is a joke. However, TVXQ has gathered fans who cheered madly for them since their debut stage. Super Junior has gathered 110,000 audience to the Tokyo Dome without really donig much activities in Japan. It’s like revealing their identities when SM declared virtual nation in their [SM Town] with their citizens being global fans. They’re not liked by everyone. But someone who comes to know about SM idols become a passionate fan. From thousands to ten thousand, there are fans who will gladly pay for SM’s concerts wherever you go.

    # 1 I SM’s Core, TVXQ

TVXQ is this nation’s core. From “Rising Sun” to “KYHD”, TVXQ’s songs and performances had a certain distance from Korean Popular Music’s trend. Their songs were complicated and intense when the so-called “hook songs” were in, and their performances require focused attention rather than easy following. When they sing the chorus part, “Keep your head down” of their song “KYHD”, Uknwo Yunho and Max Changmin does a move where they control the dancers to bow their heads. If you just listen to their music, you don’t really know the meaning of it. SM’s unique style where a song comes complete with the song and the performance on-stage. SMP in short. TVXQ keeps SMP’s original form the most. It’s impossible to watch and enjoy it lightly. You have to watch the stage, and be drawn into it to become a fan. As a result, TVXQ’s fandom is the most passionate and the largest even within SM.

The idol group with most maniac and the largest. The new album [Catch Me]’s “Catch Me” is like a war by TVXQ against people outside the fandom. The prelude of “Catch Me” is about 50 seconds, and it divides into a determined 1st half and the rhythmical electronic sound. After the chorus of the 1st verse there’s suddenly a new part with different beat instead of the 2nd verse. After the 2nd verse, a new melody is added instead of the chorus. In the song totalling 4 minute 38 seconds, the easy to memorize chorus where ‘Catch Me’ is repeated, only appears twice.

    # 2 I The perfection of performance music

It may be too complicated for a popular music. But the complicated composition of [Catch Me] maximizes the effect as a “watching music”. The complicated composition of the song clarifies the organization on stage like musical choreography. For example, the two members who match each other’s moves in the prelude like mirrors divide into each side to show different moves when the 1st verse starts, and goes through the “union” part to dance together in the chorus. The moves that just the two did in the intro are done by al the dancers in the end.The new part after the chorus of the 1st verse, which sounded so complicated when just listening, creates a dragon-like shape on stage by TVXQ and the dancers. This part is expanded into a even larger shape after the 2nd verse. In ‘KYHD’ the dancers danced with the members in the centre, and moved sometimes like marionettes controlled by the two. On the other hand in ‘Catch Me’ they are sitting unlike the members, or help them like their shadows. The back dancers of ‘KYHD’ acted like the two members were expanded to many, deleting the empty spaces of the stage, and kept the unique feel of TVXQ based on military dances. And ‘Catch Me’, released after ‘KYHD’ made the dancers into a moving background on stage, and TVXQ and dancers unite to draw a one very large picture.

The music part of ‘Catch Me’ is close to scenario for performance. The intention of ‘Catch Me’ is more clear when watching the stage rather than listening, and more so when watching the stage from the beginning to the end with the full picture made by TVXQ and dancers. All the moves, connected by intricate techniques, transform the stage which started with the two members’ dance into a large picture filling the stage with just the manpower in the end, and they even create a spectacle where the two members are in air. The dramatic and intense impression made with pure manpower for every second of the stage. That must be something TVXQ wants to deliver. Performance music for appreciation. That’s ‘Catch Me’. Exactly as written. Even if the decision changes based on personal style.

The fact that components used in ‘Catch Me’ follows to an extent the trend of current popular music industry may be a compromise to supplement its such characteristic. ‘Catch Me’ is based on electronics, which could be called the global mainstream, and it introduces a very fun rhythm that you could even do a shuffle dance for in the end of the intro. The chorus melody which repeats ‘Catch me, Catch me’ is the easiest and simplest out of all TVXQ’s title. Even to those who are not planning on watching TVXQ’s stage it’s an easy melody to grab their attention. As well, the complicated composition is stitched up nice and clean with electronic sound. It’s technically interesting how they switch naturally to a different melody after the 2nd part when the chorus is supposed to appear. The content is complicated and precise, and perhaps resolutely heavy. However, the deliberation of that to the public takes the current trend to an extent. ‘Viva’ which follows ‘Catch Me’ is produced by the Underdogs, who worked with Chris Brown, Beyonce, etc. However, there’s a separate break part to show off TVXQ’s dance and a determined electric guitar sound on top of Underdogs’ trendy rhythm. Even in the song of a producing team who’s very close to global trend, TVXQ attempted to maintain their style.

    # 3 I What TVXQ can do

As such, [Catch Me] is an album where the company which has been most commercially successful in the Korean pop industry has expressed their taste actively. SM can now show their SMP in any trend. From the popular view it might be a weird music. The emotions delivered are a little distant from the current trend. However, SM and especially TVXQ has never fought with songs that caught the public with just one cue, except for very exceptional cases like SNSD’s ‘Gee’. Rather, they absorbed a part of the public into their fans little by little based on their passionate-from-the-beginning fandom. It will be difficult to persuade the entire public. However, whoever’s caught by the certain popular point of ‘Catch Me’ will become a fan who repeats stages of ‘Catch Me’ over and over again. ‘Catch Me’ has realized with high technical perfection the music and stage sought out by SM since ‘Warrior’s Descendants’ by H.O.T. Whether you like it your not, TVXQ’s the only team in the whole world that can realize such unique ‘watching music’ with such high level. And that, must be the most powerful thing for TVXQ and SM right now.

Releasing 6th album ‘Catch Me’ TVXQ “Are we 9 years old already?”

As they fought with the fast changing trend, 9 years have passed by already. They have become the eldest hyung of idols somewhere along. To the passing by time, and pouring out hubae idols, they oppose and get along. They are TVXQ. They’re the still-icon of idols and those who sow the seed of K-POP boom.

"We were 5 years old when SNSD debuted, and we recently heard that they’ve met their own 5 year anniversary. I felt that we really have become old."(Changmin)

"It’s the most basic thing to greet everyone well in order to be on a good relationship with people around you. I want the hubaes to have the mindset of doing this for a long time."(Yunho)

They wanted to be the mentors of hubae idols. They laughed, saying that their company hubae SNSD treats them for somewhere in between ‘nice and easy going oppas’ and ‘strict sunbaes’. And yet they don’t stop giving guiding suggestions for the company maknae EXO, who debuted this year, to build their grounds. What they emphasize is Long Run. This is also where TVXQ! is headed for.

"Look at our team’s biorhythm. It’s not a team that got successful instantly in Japan and overseas after being successful in Korea. We went up step by step by learning and feeling the culture of other countries. As such, we developed a standard on what’s right and what’s wrong. I came to think about how to urge myself naturally to keep running while going for the long run."(Changmin)

In order to run long in the jungle-like market TVXQ wanted to quickly absorb the fast-changing trend and move from a genre to another. Ironically, they wanted to get rid of the heavy and strong image. Easy and comfortable, so easier to approach, is what they wanted to leave as.

"I want to do music that’s not set in a form. Instead of going ‘I’m gonna do R&B’ or ‘I’m gonna do pop’, I think we should switch between various genres like a chameleon."(Changmin)

"The image about us singing with our whole life on stake could work as both our strength and our weakness. As we sung a lot of strong songs, we have built an image that doesn’t work with singing songs like ‘Gangnam Style’. That could be a weakness, if you want to put it that way. I want us to be someone who people can expect a lot of changing looks from."(Yunho)

The 6th album contains smart strategies that TVXQ has chosen to seek long run. The title song ‘Catch Me’ clearly contains the intensity of the previous ‘Wae’ and emphasizes the easily ear-catching chorus. The music video that reminds the viewer of a SF movie also provides viewing pleasure. Songs like ‘Dream”How are you”I Swear’ are light and sweet to the extent that we question whether this really is TVXQ singing. Their intention of attempting various genres while providing high expectations for the concert is clearly visible. It wasn’t an empty talk when Changmin said that he felt “It’s a brand new start” after finishing the recording of the last song of the album.

The two leave for a world tour starting with this album. Yunho has picked New York Madison Square Guarden for his dream stage and Changmin has picked the passionate South America. Both grew up once more experiencing the ups and downs of the life, and they dream of another tomorrow while in today’s growing pain.

"I cried like a baby on the Tokyo-dome stage of the Japanese Tour. I was so happy I couldn’t believe that I was standing there. I had even thought about not being a singer for real… I thought to myself that I should really try hard." (Yunho)

"As I was shooting the Japanese movie, every day was stressful under strict director and with the Japanese staff. It was really hard, but as I pushed through it, it got fun in the end. I think I was just happy regardless of any of my mistakes during the tour. It is probably more important to enjoy the moment." (Changmin)

[Trans] TVXQ! “Forget about our dark selves” ①

"Hello, we’re TVXQ. Does the mood go down a little because we don’t have greetings like "We are SuperJunior"?"

Although they don’t have greetings like the idols these days,
TVXQ smiled brightly from the beginning of the interview to lighten up the mood.

TVXQ!, who’s coming back with 6th album ‘Catch Me’ in one year and eight months have met with the press on the 27th at La Casa hotel in Seoul.

Japanese Tour, SM Town live… 1 year and 8 months was a short time to them in a way.
Even more, they put in much effort for the long-waited Korean album.

"We spent much time preparing for the title song. We thought that a music that could keep the feel of ‘TVXQ!’ while communicating with the mass media was necessary"(Max Changmin)

In order to create a title song that has both their pre-existing style and mass media appeal they postponed their comeback period for 1~2 months than planned.

Max Changmin said that “With ‘Wae’ from the last album, it was a new song from a long hiatus so a song with an impact was necessary. But with this time, we thought that we should go for an easier to listen to, and easier to memorize song.”

The title song for the 6th album ‘Catch Me’ seeks mass media appeal with the easy melody in the chorus, but uses the latest trend - dubstep- to seek intense performance that is SMP at the same time. As well, they also tried to put in melody on a dubstep beat to sing.

The performance for ‘Catch Me’ maintains the intensity, but it definitely feels much different than before.

While the performance overall has a musical-like plot development and details to describe the inner psychology, the moves themselves are very mass-media friendly that even the elementary school students can easily approach. The dance moves are even called “Hulk Dance” “Dragon Bulp Dance” and “Mirror Dance”.

"The people who were in elementary school when we sung ‘Hug’ are now all adults. To be honest, I think some of the elementary school students won’t know who we are. We wanted to appeal strongly to even the elementary school students, and that’s how a new choreography was born" (Uknow Yunho)

It is told that world-renowned choreographer Tony Testa was also troubled while making the choreography for ‘Catch Me’.
The lyric contains story about a man’s contrasting sides about bidding the woman goodbye while secretly wanting her to not let him go, and he had difficult time understanding it due to cultural difference.
He postponed the schedule with Justin Bieber and focused on creating the choreography for TVXQ.

The finished work represents the man’s scream through the beats and the contrasting sides through the ‘Mirror Dance’. .
Uknow Yunho and Max Changmin are doing same but different moves as if they’re seeing themselves through the mirror.
The two create the “outer self” for their individual parts and “inner self” when it’s not their parts.
And the distance between the emotions is expressed by the dancers. So the whole military dance represents one man in essence.

The costumes are also a flipped back and forth costume. It’s the same clothes, but Uknow Yunho and Max Changmin wear clothes that have reversed front and back.
It’s also new that they’re wearing trainers when they’ve always settled for suits or the likes.

The behind story to “Hulk Dance” and “Dragon Bulp Dance” were also revealed.

"Tony Testa said that he got the idea from the movie ‘Avengers’. "Hulk Dance", "Dragon Bulp Dance" … and there also was a "Transformer Dance" which got dropped at the last minute." (Uknow Yunho)

Uknow Yunho explains the mass media appealing dance like this

"Haven’t we all played around with trains and tried the Chinese martial arts arm movements while watching the movie ‘Once Upon a Time in China’?
I think it’s a mass-media friendly dance that can appeal strongly even to elementary school students.
It may be a hit or miss because it’s a unique and new style, but I’d like to leave it to the public to decide.

If you see the music video for ‘Catch Me’ the choreography is complicated although it looks simple at first.
Between the TVXQ members, and between TVXQ and the back dancesr, there has to be a precise organization in order for most of these moves to be successful.
Uknow Yunho talked about the difficulties of the choreography, saying “We have to do the choreography while in physical connection with the dancers. If someone screws up, it’s all over.” Would they be able to show such performance on stage, live?

"We should show the performance for real for each of the broadcasting company.
But we’d also like to show it live to a certain level” (Uknow Yunho)

TVXQ is planning on showing the performance and the live stage separate for each broadcasting company.
But they’re also doing the performance on the live stage as well. TVXQ’s even going as far as wanting to sing while they’re held up by the dancers.
Uknow Yunho revealed that “When we’re practicing, the dancer grasped my stomach for the ‘Catch Me’ stage. When I am lying down or jumping and the body balance is messed up, there are parts where we don’t quite work out, so it’s difficult.”
Max Changmin said that “Dancers also have to dance while lifting us up and landing us.
As it is not a comfortable position for us to sing either, we need to prepare a lot”

TVXQ has commented a lot about the mass media appeal in 6th album activities. Why would that be.

Uknow Yunho explained that “Teacher Lee SooMan said that ‘If you take heavy song like ‘Wae’ or ‘Rising Sun’ this time again, I think you’ll become even more separated from the public. Wouldn’t it be nice to try again to appeal to a younger target and not just your own league where only the manias exist?’ and we agreed to it.”
He added that “we want the group to continue for a long time by becoming something everyone can enjoy rather than just being dark and charismatic.”

TVXQ is already facing 10 year anniversary.
How much of what they wanted before the debut do they think they’ve achieved.

"There are new groups coming out from countless companies, and unfortunately most of them get forgotten.
All the fans… who gave us lots of love through 8, 9 years…
It’s half the success to be able to sing in front of the mass who recognizes us.
The rest is up to us to fill up” (Max Changmin)

Changmin mentioned Shinhwa while explaining their goal.
He was deeply impressed with the recent concerts and being active in other areas while maintaining the singing career.
"Our goal is to become a singer who is active for over 12 years, no actually with long life.
Wouldn’t we be able to break the stereotype that idol singers die off around age 30 if we find charms in other areas than just singing?
As Shinhwa sunbaes have left the precedence already, I feel that we should be included in that and leave our hubaes a precedence”

[Trans] StarTalk. TVXQ! “We’re the ‘busy boys’, badder than ‘bad boys’ “

*Before we start, the title’s suppsed to be a pun in Korean. “Bad” = Nappeun and “Busy” = Bappeun so We’re “bappeun”boys, more “nappeun” than then “nappeun”boys.

It really is ‘Return of the King’. TVXQ!, who is the male group that represents Korea has returned with new album ‘Catch Me’. Specifically, this album attempted musical variation by using a dubstep sound to the electronic basis, etc. We met TVXQ! members in a hotel at Shinsa-dong. The members who apparently had a nuit blanche shooting for a commercial seemed a little tired. However, as the interview started, they concentrated very well. Uknow Yunho led the interview fluently, and Max Changmin added comments in the important moments.

―New album since 1 year and 8 months. What did you aim for

▲ We wanted to comeback fast, but time passed by a lot as we went through our international schedule. We needed a bright song this time. We needed a little more mass media appealing feels. If we continue songs like ‘Wae (Keep Your Head Down’ it could turn into just our own league. We wanted to find a middle ground where we can stay friendly to the mass media while staying within SMP(SM Music Performance).

― It’s already been 10 years since debut. TVXQ even appeared in the popular TV show ‘Report 1997’.

▲ We saw it and it felt really good. ‘Hug’ was played in the end, and I liked it that we were mentioned together. If Season 2 of ‘Report 1997’ we think TVXQ could come out as the main theme. Would that be ‘Report 2004’.

The elementary school students these days may not know TVXQ very well. The fans who heard our debut song ‘Hug’ in their elementary school are over 20 already. We want to make new fans now. If younger friends like our song, we think our life as singers will prolong. We like to appeal to a variety of age. We did a lot of strong-performance oriented song since ‘Hug’ and we could show a soft song someday. Our goal is to try various genres and we’re in the search for it.

―Was there anything difficult while being active as a duo?

▲ There were lot of new things at first. We were very concerned at first about singing nearly 30 songs with just the two of us when we did the Japanese tour. But we gained a lot of confidence as we went through our schedule. Based on that confidence, we got to try a new style of music.

― It seems like we can put the title ‘the Best’ to TVXQ!

▲ TVXQ is a team with a history. We broke a lot of our own records. The fact that we win against our own selves and break the records means something. The many successes from Japan, great memories… that’s what we made together with the fans. What we can say with most confidence is that we think we’re the best at least when we’re going up the stage.

―But compared to the fame of TVXQ it seems like the success is rather small in individual activities such as acting and variety.
▲ Because we only dipped our toes in (laughs). We want to solidify the team that is TVXQ first. Then when we get the opportunities such as acting, we’ll do whatever it is. We want to do a lot of variety shows in this album’s promotional activities. There are a lot of things that we couldn’t try until now because we’ve been trying to show the strong side of us. We will try to do something that can appeal to a lot of people this time.

    ―TVXQ! seem too exemplary.

▲ I don’t think I am a bad-boy style. But if you ask me whether I’ve dreamed of deviance, the answer is Yes. I want to fall in love as well. But a even badder guy than a bad-boy is a busy guy. Since this is a really important period, I want to focus. (Uknow Yunho)

I’ve been thinking that I need to be polite wherever I go. But I am a 10 year old singer now so I think I’m going to be a little more sleazy now. Even if Yunho hyung won’t be, at least I’ll be like that. Until now, there has been a lot of images that have been restricting us. But I’m not going to act out or be a roughneck in effort to change my image. I just think that I’m at an age where I can be more comfortable, have fun, and be relaxed. I’m curous about what will come in my future. (Max Changmin)

―SM Entertainment is becoming a large company. They’ve even signed Kang HoDong and Jang DongGun. How does that feel

▲ Bigger Company means that the artists will receive more opportunities. Personally, I am more shocked at Kim ByungMan-ssi joining our comapny than Kang HoDong-ssi and Jang DongGun-ssi. As we did ‘Kiss and Cry’ together I went when his father passed away and we’ve been in touch. I called after seeing the news, but it was turned off. He must’ve been in the jungle.

― Is there any hubae singers you’re eyeing on. Don’t mention anyone from SM Entertainment

▲ CN Blue! (Max Changmin), CN Blue, FT Island! (Uknow Yunho) Their know how to rock the stage. They’ve definitely done a lot of concerts.

―Why does TVXQ not use SNS

▲ We do think it is necessary, but we have the responsibilities as TVXQ. If we start, I don’t think we can control it properly because we’re too honest. We want to show through our actions instead of words. I started KakaoTalk for the first time because of AniPang and 140,000 is my best score so far.

[Trans] TVXQ “10 years old next year..We have always changed”

TVXQ is the representative team for the idol groups that appeared in the 00s.

As they debuted in 2004 the single-album culture spread, and the stereotype that idol groups can’t sing and just go for their looks was also broken.

TVXQ, who will be 10 years old next year has members Uknow Yunho (26) and Max Changmin (24) as three members left the team in 2009.

It was the team’s homework to create harmony and balance for the two members while making up for the empty presence of the three members.

The single album ‘Wae (KYHD)’ which was released last January received passing point in such aspects.

However, perhaps due to the homework of finding music that will bring out the music of the duo’s harmony they have returned in a year and eight month with the 6th album ‘Catch Me’.

The two members who recently did an interview at one hotel in Gangnam, explained that “Our music has been dark and strong all along. If we leave out mass media appeal, it could be just our own league so it took us a while to figure out the compromising line.”

It seemed like the two grew much through the Japanese tour which gathered 550,000 audience last January-April.

They said that “We got to understand each other more as we went through the Japanese tour together. It seems like it’s our fate to do a new start every single time. As such, TVXQ has changed throughout the 10 years. It will change in the future as well.”

Based on know-hows and experiences, TVXQ is holding their first world tour ‘Catch Me’. The following is Q&A.

    — Concerns about music.

▲TVXQ! has a strong ‘SMP(SM Music Performance)’ feel. In the last album, we focused on what we do best, but this time we had to try new things based on our experience. The concerns were about letting go. (Yunho)

    — Pressure to be a role-model for hubae groups.

▲ Before we be a role-model we gotta take care of our own ass. haha. If we bring out an intense song like ‘Wae’ it could be too obvious so we had to broaden our feel. It’s about time we attempt to reach out to the public. (Changmin)

    —Specific changes.

▲ “A lot of our songs require seeing the dance as well to understand. However, we put in a variety of songs starting with ‘Catch Me’ which combines dubstep and melody, ‘How Are You’ which is a ballad that feels like the 90’s group Maronie, ‘Dream’ which reproduced 1999 duo Chanamini’s song, ‘Gateway’ which is a Linkin Park like rock song. When we ask the songwriters for a TVXQ song they always give us a dark and intense song with anti-society lyrics, but we asked them to consider us rookies and give us songs this time.” (Yunho)

—There are songs that are following the 90s trend

▲ “We danced to songs from sunbaes like Noise, Kim WonJoon from the 90s. I listened to it a lot because of my aunt when I was young. Haha. The music trend comes back and back and we can sometimes hear songs like back when we debuted these days.” (Yunho)

—The harmony between the two since becoming a duo.

▲ “It’d be lie to say that we never fight. It was really new because the Japanese tour in the beginning of the year was our first concert together as a duo. As we dealt with the 10-50,000 fans with just the two of us, we were overwhelmed. If the Japanese concert was just a one-time thing, we wouldn’t have figured it out, but as we did it over 20 times for three months, we could connect. As we built experience and know-hows, it became fun.”(Changmin)

▲”We grew up without noticing it ourselves. We only thought about giving our best in the past, but we can afford to communicate with the audience more now.” (Yunho)

—Hubae idols poured out during the break. Do you feel competitive.

▲ “I watch the music programs, and we buy the CDs of hubaes such as MBLAQ, FT ISLAND, IU, etc. I try to learn from the hubae groups as well. If I don’t do that I’m scared that TVXQ! will just remain under its popularity, unable to grow. I noticed Tasty, which has two members and I thought we should try hard as well. SHINee’s ‘sherlock’ stages were also a stimulant.”(Yunho)

▲ “I don’t see them as competitives.(*The article says that he does, but that doesn’t make sense with the rest of his quote so I’m guessing it’s a type-o) When I see friends who do well, I like them instead of thinking ‘I’m gonna do better than them’. I buy albums with my own money for hubaes not just from SM but others like CN Blue and support them.” (Changmin)

    — What efforts do you put in as sunbae groups.

▲ “Music trends change very quickly. Hook songs were in few years ago, and electronic musics are in right now, and it seems like we’re in a time of change again. ‘TVXQ-like’ is a sword with blade on both sides, whether it’s referring to music or ability. If we end at just the fans who like us, it will end there and we will be spent away. We can continue for long if we develop our own feels while following the demands of the mass media.” (Changmin)

    — First world tour.

▲”It’s not going to be too different from the Asian tour. But the first concert, the Seoul concert is a first timer in 3 years since 2009 in Korea, and the first concert as a duo, so it’s both exciting and pressuring” (Yunho)

    —memorable stage.

▲”Tokyo Dome concert from the Japanese tour this year. I didn’t cry when we got awards, but I cried there for the first time. I let myself go without realizing after the concert. I was pressured by thoughts like ‘Would I be able to work well with Changmin’ ‘Would we be able to gather the audience’ and the memories passed by me like a panorama in the last song and I couldn’t contain myself. It was a live tour that will be in the top 3 of my singer life.” (Yunho)

▲ The ‘SM Town LIVE’ concert last 2010, which was our first official stage. I was even more nervous than for our first debut stage. I was so nervous I was shaking and my knees were knocking. It was a period when I wasn’t confident about whether ‘we can really do it’. After this stage I had the confidence that we can do it.” (Changmin)

    — Thinking about going to the U.S.

▲ “I do have the desire but rather than just a ‘let’s go!’ we’re gonna look at how it plays. If we have the right song for the right time, we’ll give it a try, but now’s not the time.” (Yunho)

▲ “The music that PSY sunbae made wasn’t intended for the U.S. market from the start. A likable content met a great time. There’s no guarantee that it will work no matter how much you target the market. If you make great content and if a day comes when it does work, that’ll be the best. We won’t give it a forced try.” (Changmin)

—Anything about you that changed while being a singer.

▲ “I act simply, but I think a lot. Before, I went all the way to the end even if people said it won’t work, and then I got hurt. Now, I’ve learned to let go. Of course, I just learned to go around. I never give up.” (Yunho)

▲ “I was always pressuring myself to the thought that I have to grow up more for the next album. Sure you may make more money, but you get more stressed. But now, I just have the attitude of have fun in whatever I do. I try not to be stressed out about giving laughs on variety shows. I just wanna live a fun life.” (Changmin)

—Something you discovered new about each other since becoming a duo.

▲ “Changmin always said the right thing and acted like a grown up. If you want to put it in a bad light, it could be seen inhuman, but he has always tried very hard. I wanted him to break out of it, and he has. I thought that he was someone who keeps it to himself, but learned that he’s someone who wants to express himself. As well, he was so cautious before but he pushes through with confidence now, and that makes him more trustworthy. He’s a dongseng, but also a reliable workmate and friend.” (Yunho)

▲ “Yunho hyung shows manry and amazing look on stage, but he’s more sensitive and genuine person than me.” (Changmin)

    — TVXQ! within SM Entertainment.

▲ “A great importance. We act as the bridge between the director Kangta and the senior BoA sunbae. BoA sunbae doesn’t hold the title but her eyes are just that of the director, and we’re like junior-director levels. Haha.” (Yunho, Changmin)

    — What do you want to do for the 10th year anniversary.

▲ “We want to do a show, kind of like a talk concert where we talk with the fans in a small concert venue as a 10th year anniversary event. I want to listen to the story of fans who were with us for 10 years, and I want to make them sing as well.” (Yunho)

—Till when will you be able to show performance stage.

▲ “My hero Michael Jackson danced and sung until in his 50s. Insooni sunbae also constantly tries something new. I don’t want to lose the will as an artist easily.” (Yunho)

Uknow Yunho from TVXQ has revealed that he’s into house decoration these days.

Uknow Yunho revealed in his recent interview with OSEN that “I used to just go outside, but now I stay home all the time. I’m into house decoration.”

Uknow Yunho continued, with satisfactory grin, saying that “I want to try everything that I can. I go around the neighbourhood in my bicycle, and I drop by at the dong office. I like buying clothes at the Dongdaemun, and I take pictures these days. I’ve been to an amusement park recently. I had good times without anyone knowing.”

Uknow Yunho who ways that he uses the public transit and goes to the fish market where him and his friends try a bet on who can reduce the price the fastest, Max Changmin said that “I don’t like hanging out with people. I stay home quietly, cleaning the house, etc.”

[Trans] Uknow Yunho “SM Rank #3, responsible for connecting the company and the artist”

TVXQ mentioned the inner ranks of SM and said that “We think that we’re after Director Kang-Ta, and BoA sunbae.”

Uknow Yunho added that “Since Director Kang-Ta is an aratist, he tries to understand the position of the artists, but as he has the title ‘director’ under his belt, he could take the view of the company. (So he wanted) us to be the mediator between the company and the artist to connect the two sides.”

Uknow Yunho, who said that “Max Changmin and I give good advice and talk to friends who ask for help” also added that he feels that ‘they are 9 years old already’ when he sees lots of hubaes whenever he goes out on music programs.

He said that “I don’t think we should force responsibility upon ourselves just because we have lots of hubaes. I think we try to take care of them a lot because they treat us like sunbaes. When they do that, we try our best to show a more sunbae-like side of us and talk to them a lot, and all.”

On the other hand, Uknow Yunho said that they will “appear in not just music programs but also in variety shows in order to earn elementary school student fans’ popularity”.

[Trans] Max Changmin “I want SHINee’s ‘Replay’ (‘Noona You’re so Pretty’)”

Max Changmin of TVXQ! has revealed that he wants SHINee’s debut song, ‘Replay’ (‘Noona You’re so Pretty’).

In a recent interview, Max Changmin said that “I’m jealous of SHINee’s ‘Replay’ (‘Noona You’re so Pretty’), which never gets old. It’s still sophisticated and good even when I listen to it now. It was right when we were doing the activities for ‘Mirotic’, and I told SHINee all the time that ‘I’m very jealous of your song’ ‘This should’ve been our song’ and things like that.”

To this, Uknow Yunho said “If we got greedy and took ‘Noona You’re so Pretty’ it wouldn’t have been called a ‘Noona You’re so Pretty’. It fit well because it was SHINee and I like the song very much as well. (Q. Can’t you do it for the concerts?) If we do, I’ll wear TaeMin’s wig. Changmin you can be Key or JongHyun.” and made the whole interview scene laughing.

On the other hand, TVXQ!, who are the 1st generations of the Korean wave, said that “we think improved contents can only continue to be created if we treat the overseas market with honesty instead of just one-time shot attitude.” even though they were proud of the Korean wave by the K-pop stars.

[Trans] “Go a little easy now?…TVXQ is still hungry”

It’s been a year and eight months. Most definitely not a short time. During that time the two seasoned even more. Their music, and their choreography. Both differed in class. It’s not easy this time either. Peculiar style of music that combines orchestra and dubstep into electronic sound. Highly complicated dance where arms are combined with the dancers and they are held in the air. It can’t be any more difficult.

'Original K-wave' TVXQ has returned. They released the new album 'Catch Me' on September 26th and started their Korean promotion. They've only released the music video. However, the improved states of Yunho and Changmin was undeniably evident. Extraordinary music and unparalleled choreography. The fans are already expecting the live stage.

"We got popular as soon as we debuted. Their were a lot of love from overseas such as Japan as well. It’s something that we’re very thankful of. So we didn’t want to be the same. There’s lots of hubaes, and there area also lots of fans who’re holding expectations on us. We wanted to show a changed look. So we gave it a try. Not as strong as the previous song ‘Wae’ but different… that’s the weapon of TVXQ".

Two men who are never easy. Before the Thanksgivings break started, we met in La Casa hotel of Shinsa-dong and talked about the new album. Wanting to pave TVXQ’s own way instead of choosing the easy way. We could tell exactly why they are still at the top of the top.

◆ “Easy Success? It’s a fruit after failure”

They debuted in 2004. Then they became star-celebrities in one hop. In other words, they woke up to be stars. Success that came very suddenly. They were so busy everyday they couldn’t even catch a breath. It was tiring and there were frustrations. Popularity was thought granted as well. However, that was only momentarily. As they promoted overseas, they tasted failure. They started again from the very bottom. And they stood as ‘korean wave’ like that.

"We got popular as soon as we debuted in Korea. Then after exactly a year we started Japanese promotion. To be honest, we were off-guard, thinking we’d start with some popularity from the beginning. But oh no. The first debut single really, ‘completely’ failed. There wasn’t enough budget so we switched between same set of clothes for two months… we started fresh as rookies. I think we gained popularity after 3~4 years." (Changmin)

Since then, ‘TVXQ’ became the number one K-pop star. They were the first male group to be on top of both Korea and Japan. However, another ordeal was upon them. It was when they were on the very top. They had to endure long hiatus against their will. Instead of the previous look, they had to re-organize the team as a duo and promote as such. Sudden change. It was not easy. The time of frustration and tears that were shed. It was painful beyond imagination.

"To be honest, we did take it for granted because we got popular wherever we went. The sheer fact that we are popular was physically tiring and there were moments when we were annoyed. However, we think we changed a lot after going through the long hiatus. We felt that it was so precious to have our stage be supported and be loved. We are just so thankful, and we want to show better looks of us because of that" (Yunho, Changmin)

◆ “Korean activities are the root of TVXQ. That’s why it’s ‘Catch Me’”

Looking back, it wasn’t so smooth. The thoughts about activities changed a lot as such, as well. Specifically, it was time to realize the importance and value of Korean activities.

"Even if we are successful overseas, I thought that the roots shouldn’t be shaken in the end. I had the thought of starting again from the Korean stages. The big goal is to show TVXQ!’s unique charm. But if we go too difficult, there is a dangerous possibility of just staying in our own league. Trying different things, while finding ways to communicate. It was important to find the compromise in between." (Yunho)

That’s how they found the new album’s title song ‘Catch Me’. Catch Me is a new dance song which combines dubstep (slow sound combined with broken up rhythms), melody line, orchestra and electronic sounds. A track that’s keeping the challenges of TVXQ, but not losing the mass media appeal. It’s a difficult song, but they tried to play it easy.

"Title song, ‘Catch Me’ has an intense feel. When other people are dancing with dubstep, we played it through music. But in order to neutralize that intense feel we added strings (orchestra) to the sound. Being lyrical in a strong song. Keeping the unique colour of TVXQ, but adding the lyrical strings to make it not so difficult for the audience" (Yunho, Changmin)

They put the most attention on the performance. For this time, they worked with Tony Testa, famous for being the choreographer for late Michael Jackson. Choreography that’s nearly a circus continues one after the other. Instead of a ‘point dance’ which can be easily followed they created a unique style of dance where a story is told. It’s a high level of technicality, by showing large movements like dragons by connecting arms with the dancers, or being held up in the air.

"You can just consider this choreography as a mirror. The plot is that Changmin and I are one. I represent the inner side of a person, and Changmin represents the outer side. For something like the dragon dance, we combine the arms with the dancers and move. If we don’t work together, everything falls. Cooperation is really the key. We put in so much effort that Testa even post-poned the schedule for Justin Bieber to create this choreography" (Yunho)

◆ “Go easy? TVXQ! is still hungry”

It’s pretty much acrobatics at this point. The song. The choreography. Nothing is easy. It took them a year and eight months to comeback because the preparation time was long. If you consider the fast cycle of music industry, it’s way too long. However, TVXQ was firm. Rather than going easy, continuously seeking change and going TVXQ!’s path is their ultimate goal and the reason of their challenge.

"We had wanted to comeback faster than this. But TVXQ!’s weapon is change, and we wanted to comeback with a different look. I guess that why it took a little longer. I think TVXQ is a group that can’t easily be solved even if we say let’s take it easy. Of course there’s a lot of pressure as there’s a high expectation. But a changed look. Being able to show TVXQ!’s unique charm seems to be the most important thing." (Changmin)

TVXQ doesn’t go easy. Subsequently, future musical goal is also ‘change’. The predictions of the members Yunho and Changmin is that it will be an unpredictable group. It’s also a homework for them to pull up the stage level to their title of original k-pop idol.

"We think it means different if you say something’s great and if you say that a distinct feel has been set. If you only continue that one feel just because something’s great it’s always all the same. Maybe the next album will have an even stronger music and dance, or it could be the complete opposite. A group that does it again fresh every single time. That’s the key of TVXQ!. In the end, shouldn’t we challenge with the quality of music and performance?" (Yunho, Changmin)

[Trans] TVXQ, the best of the male idols? “We’re a group with history”

9 year old idol TVXQ is coming back after 1 year and 8 months of break to try the top spot again. TVXQ, who feel like grown up men now, returned with mass media appeal on their unique colour.

◇ “The elementary school students these days don’t know TVXQ very well”

Group TVXQ, who will not embarrass the title ‘the best’ 2nd generation idols, will meet its 10th anniversary next year. As TVXQ!’s debut song ‘Hug’ was played in the end of recently popular ‘Report 1998’ which brought back the 90s boom, it cannot be denied that TVXQ has entered the path of middle-aged singers.

However, it is also true that as TVXQ brought forth strong performance as its strength, there was a strong conception that TVXQ is ‘stylish’ rather than a ‘familiar’ group, and they could not reduce the distance between them and the mass media.

Uknow Yunho said that “we could not bring back a style like the last song,’Wae (KYHD)’. Under the goal of going closer to the mass media we tried hard to play out the melody easier while not losing our weapon.”

Apparently the producer and songwriter Yoo Young Jin PD also cared about this point as well for them. “He really took care of us because next year’s our 10th anniversary. He said that ‘I want at least you to go with mass media appeal in your mind’”

Uknow Yunho, who said that the elementary school students these days don’t really know TVXQ very well, said jokingly, “People who heard our music in their elementary school are all over 20 now. We were actually thinking about targeting the elementary school students this time. We had even made choreography that younger audience can follow along” to draw out big laugh.

In continuation, Max Changmin said “The younger friends don’t really know the 1st generation idols that we saw and grew up with. We thought that if we become singers who can appeal to fans of various age and if the younger people like our music as well we could pass this on to the next generation singers by showing us (like the 1st generation idols that we saw and grew up with)” to point out the importance of mass media popularity.

"As it has been about 10 years, we feel directly that the past trends are returning. Our goal right now is to try discover various genres and we’re still in the search for it. There are also lot of genres that we tried new this time as well."

◇ Uknow Yunho - Max Changmin ‘Wae’ for just the two of them. “Activity that brought confidence”

TVXQ didn’t start out as duo from the beginning. It must’ve been not easy to fill up the empty spaces on the stage for TVXQ!’s Uknow Yunho and Max Changmin who started anew with the last 5th album ‘Wae’.

Max Changmin said that “It was very new to try music for us two after being active for over 5 years and to come out as the two after not so long hiatus. When we were doing the Japan, I was worried a lot because we had to sing 25~30 songs in 2.5~3 hours for just the two of us.”

However, he added that “I think we proceeded through with even more concentration than usual. After doing it, we knew how to make the stage with two. We felt that we could sufficiently lead long stages.”

TVXQ, who stuck together during not too short of a time and returned anew with confidence, said that the key point of this activity would be how to sublimate their unique strong performance and an easy-listening song.

Uknow Yunho said “I can’t say that there isn’t a difficult part in this song, because it has our colours in it. However, we made the chorus part - which is usually listened to the most- a little easier and put in lots of compromises in the album.”

◇ Uknow Yunho “More surprised at the news for being in the same company as Kim ByungMan than Jang DongGun”

Recently TVXQ!’s company SM Entertainment has took over AM Entertainment, allowing TVXQ to be in the same company as actors such as Jang DongGun and actresses such as Kim Ha Neul.

To this, Uknow Yunho said that “It could mean more opportunity if the company gets bigger. It is realistically true that as more professionals come the suport gets bigger. It seems like they’re trying to give lots of opportunity to the artists as well.”

He continued that he hasn’t met AM Entertainment’s actor Jang DongGun or the recently joined Kang HoDong yet and honestly revealed “I never thought we’d be working in the same company”.

Specifically, Uknow Yunho expressed his affection towards Kim ByungMan and drew attention “I was shocked more that Kim ByungMan sunbae and I are in the same company than with Jang DongGun sunbae. We were in the same tv show as well and I personally went when (Kim ByungMan’s) father passed away. I always thought he was a great person.”

He also said that “We talk to each other sometimes. I called as soon as I saw the news, but the phone was off. I think he must’ve been at the jungle” and revealed disappointment.

Kim ByungMan is currently in the middle of shooting SBS “Happy Sunday - Kim ByungMan Rule of the Jungle in Madagascar” so he couldn’t be reached by the phone.

As Uknow Yunho and Max Changmin both tried to transform into actors, they clearly stated their desire as not just singers but as actors as well. So it is a situation where synergy effect is expected as the grounds for actors is increasing in the company.

◇ Good Student image? “Think we can be a little more relaxed now”

TVXQ, who are always so polite, are so well mannered they don’t seem like a 9 year old sunbae idol. So there is a little disappointment in not seeing their easy-going and honest side.

Max Changmin said that “It is true that we’re keeping ourselves within a frame. But we can’t just act out or get ourselves into a trouble all of sudden. But I think we are at an age where we can be a little more comfortable than before. I think we have to break the old images”, making us expect their perhaps slightly changed selves.

Max Changmin, who’s known as the Kyuline by being close to Kyuhyun from Super Junior expressed his desire to appear on MBC ‘Golden Fishery - Radio Star’ by saying “I saw the ‘Radio Star’ and I really wanna appear in it. There wasn’t a friend that knows me a lot, but Kyuhyun is there as the MC so I’m thinking that he could slander and pick on me”.

However unlike Max Changmin Uknow Yunho expressed his desire to appear in SBS ‘Healing Camp’. He revealed that he’s “a mania for ‘Healing Camp’” and added that he wishes to reveal various sides that have been hidden until now to the national fans by appearing in various varieties.

TVXQ, who apparently goes onto the stage and put there life up there. They aren’t seasoned for 9 years without nothing. Although they’re already on top, they dream of a little bigger world.

"If we’re talking about international activities, we’d like to build new records that international fans in Japan couldn’t try yet, like increasing the size of the national tour n Japan to make it a dome tour. We also think how great it would be to grow up to be able to perform solo (*solo as in just TVXQ) on stages such as New York Madison Square Garden, which even world-level stars consider a dream stage".

TVXQ puts importance on concerts, where their real abilities are proven and growth occurs as singers. “When we hold concerts in Japan people from various ages come to see the show rather than just the mania fans. We hope that we can become famous for holding fun team that’s worth watching the concert.”

“We dream of deviation too, but NO public lover!”

Just reblog if you’re on tumblr. If you’re not on tumblr, take the whole thing in full including this part. I don’t go around searching whether someone’s took my data or not, but it does come to my attention randomly and at random times - usually because I google my own stuff because I can’t find it on my tumblr with the back button, and copying the whole thing and claiming the credit does piss me off. This is not the first time. If you do that one more time, I am messaging you / going to your site and throwing a shitfit. Or maybe I will just stop translating. I can read the thing in original form no problem. Why bother? Doesn’t help me in any way :p

To the rest of you, enjoy the boys.

[Trans] TVXQ “Hope to be a group that will be unpredictable even if it falls to the ground”

“We were doing somethings all along, but we weren’t in Korea.” That was Uknow Yunho’s reaction to the comeback after 1 year and 8 month of break as TVXQ with new title song ‘Catch Me’. It was unusually long break for an idol group, and there were a lot of things that happened before and after that. However, they were not only calm but were relaxed, and there answers were simple and firm. TVXQ! who are comfortable enough now to say that “we could go down all of sudden, but that’s ok”. What do they have in their mind when going up the stage. The story we shared with TVXQ, who think about now, and more so about the future.

    Q. You’re already 9 years into the business.
Uknow Yunho: I think we lived about 4 years just really busy, and we went through a transition period, and we fought like so freaking much. So that’s why I wrote like that in the ‘Thanks to’. “While we fought, cried, and smiled through the 10 years, we became like this.” To be honest, a man saying things like I like you eye to eye to a man. That doesn’t really work out well. (To Changmin) Can you do that? I can’t. (laughs) I get really embarrssed expressing myself, and I think we’re a relationship where words are not necessarily required. If he’s not around, I just kind of feel like I’m missing something.

“Wanted to make it feel like 2 solos on 1 stage”

    Q. Since it’s a comeback after 1 year and 8 months, you pretty much had a 2 year long break in that 10 years.

Uknow Yunho: I didn’t think time would fly by so fast. As we had so much of a break, we wanted to return when we had more confidence in the song. As we tried to show a different side, I think it took us rather long. Just the fact that we’re doing Korean activities makes me happy. Doing a lot of international activities makes me lonely… (laughs) there is pressure, but it makes me rather excited.

    Q. You planned the Seoul Concert for the 1st sage of World Tour < TVXQ! LIVE WORLD TOUR ‘Catch Me’ > in November. That must feel interesting

Uknow Yunho: I really wanted to be on a solo stage in Korea. It was something that I really really wanted, and it seems like I have my own little resentment for not standing there for about 3 years. (laughs) I wish it would be a lot of fun and a comfortable concert. If it was “AHHH! We gotta show them something. See we’re so awesome!” kind of a concert before, I want concerts to be just something we all enjoy now. Of course it does have to be awesome (laughs)

    Q. It seems like you want to approach in a more softer sense, but the sound of the title song is still strong.

Uknow Yunho: Yes. It is still strong The sound is intense, but if you listen to it, the melody’s easy. Dubstep is currently in right now, and we tried with the idea of “putting melody into the dubstep and singing”. It was harder than we thought to be honest. Anyways, the overall sound is strong, but there are parts in the melody such as the chorus where we tried to take it very easy.

    Q. Is there a reason why you wanted to go easy?
Max Changmin: With the song ‘Wae’, we put forth a strong image. So if we do a similar song, we thought that we could just be considered to ‘do just those strong things’. We could solidify a unique image for TVXQ, but we could also be confined to it. We thought a lot in the direction of listening as easily as possible. The overall concept of the album is a story about the inner side of a human. We tried very hard to deliver it simply without being too obvious.

    Q. But TVXQ has a strong image of intense SMP like the ‘Rising Sun’.

Uknow Yunho: We know that SMP-like stuff, which are represented by intense sound are considered ‘TVXQ-like’. We’re not saying that we won’t do those. We will continue to do them. However, we’re seeking change within it. Music that we can do because we are a duo, Performance we can show because we are a duo. That’s what we’re trying to materialize. To be more specific, like two solos on one stage. Showing Changmin’s charms at one point, and then showing my charms. We’re seeking lots of changes that we can make because we’re a duo.

“Choreography that details the lyric. Have to act a lot”

    Q. Since you’ve been constantly releasing album for nearly 10 years, you probably have unusual attachment to each album.

Uknow Yunho: That’s why we participated a lot in the producing of the album this time. To be honest, all there was before was the company staffs getting together and deciding, but starting with this album our participation has increased. They asked a lot of our opinions, and we made each track of the album with lots of thoughts. Sometimes they asked “isn’t this better than this” in terms of the beat of the song, and asked in other times “I think we could add the piano in here. How does that sound like?” Since we made the album together like that, our first goal became making something new for ourselves.

    Q. The lyric for ‘I Swear’ was written by Changmin. How did that work.

Max Changmin: ‘I Swear’ was written with the fans in mind. I didn’t get to say words like “Thank you, I love you” a lot. As far as I know there are a lot of friends who seek my affection… I wrote it with a repenting feel thinking of those friends. (laughs) I am always thankful, but I just don’t say if often because I don’t think it’ll carry honesty in it if I say it too often. I try to do it very seldom in the right time and right place. (laughs)

    Q. You must’ve put in some opinions about tracklist or the mixing process.

Uknow Yunho: Yes. In terms of the tracklist, the A&R team pre-selection with all the songs we get first, but we discussed a lot with all the songs we got. As well, things like controlling the highs and the lows of the vocal… we didn’t really talk about these things before. As we started participating in the song production, we started expressing our thoughts on mixing as well. We tried to put in more care and listen to it more for each and every song of the album. Personally, I like the song ‘How are you’. It feels like Maronie, a 90s group. There are some harmonies from the ‘Cocktail Love’ as well, and an overall things that touch the 90s sentiment. It was a song that I actively said it’s really good and it should definitely be in our album.

    Q. Why did you want to touch the 90s setiment.

Uknow Yunho: I liked the Noise hyung-nims who were active in the 90s, and I liked Maronie and Satellites…a lot (laughs). Ah, I really liked them. As well, TVXQ! will meet its 10th year next year, and I get the feeling that the trend from back when we debuted is coming back recently. I think that ‘trends come back every 10 years’ is really true. The music industry focused on the 80s for a while, then electronic sound was in, and there were even songs with 80s feel to an electronic sound. Of course it doesn’t mean that we’re going to do ‘Hug’ now. (laughs) I just think that a softer and comfortable melody like then could do well.

    Q. It seems like you put in a lot of care into the music video performance. It won’t be easy reenacting it live on stage again.

Uknow Yunho: It’s hard. (laughs) It feels like my life expectancy is decreasing. It was pretty much a ‘turn-over-new-leaf’ for ‘Wae (KYHD)’ as well and… (laughs)
Max Changmin: When I got the song first, I didn’t think like that. But when the choreographer produced the choreography and showed it to us, I thought ‘I don’t want to sing this song live’… but when the time comes, I end up doing it. I have to. (laughs)

    Q. The organization of the choreography is very intricate.

Uknow Yunho: A choreographer called Tony Test made it, and he really gave it a story. At first, he came after seeing the <Avengers> so he was going to create a choreography with just the ‘Hulk’ character. Tony made 4 different choreography with this one song, and the current version has the good parts from those 4 versions. For us, we didn’t really get a choice and we just learned it all. But ‘Catch Me’ is about a man who seem like he’s sending a lover away but not really, despite the strong beat, so it seems like he changed the choreography to vary in overall as it went on because there were parts that were inconsistent with the sound and the lyrics. The super gentle guy at first gets more intense and roars, and then he comes back to the starting point. As well, the part in the beginning where Changmin and I are standing is actually one body. When Changmin is singing I’m Changmin’s inner self and performing. When I’m singing, Changmin’s my inner self. The visible emotions are demonstrated by the back dancers. We organized the choreography to detail the lyric as closely as possible, so if you see it with the lyrics, it’ll come at you a little differently.

“It seems like we’re in love/hate relationship”

    Q. You said that you “fought a whole lot” at first. Are there conflicts when you’re trying to figure everything out?

Uknow Yunho: Well for ‘Wae’ it was the first time for the two of us to do promotional activities… so there were frequent times when we had different opinions. We talked about it few times on TV, but it seems like we’re in a love/hate relationship. Kind of like Love and War…? (laughs) Well first of all both of us are greedy. As such, we put in a lot of effort into our work, but even after we finish something the expectation level changes depending on the day’s emotional state or feelings. So in such situations we have differing opinions. In order for it to be a little smoother, it seems like we need to set some sort of rules first. So we practice a lot. And when there are differing opinions like this, the whole act of mediating, practicing, and perfecting it is us challenging our own limitations. The fact that we’re realizing a thing by another through such process is meaningful in my opinion.

    Q. Were you worried that the impact that can be delivered could be reduced compared to when you were a 5 member group.

Uknow Yunho: When we were five, we had a charm of five people. When we are two, we have a charm of two. It’s a completely different story, but I can definitely tell you that we improved a lot when we became just the two of us (laughs) You can’t help it. When we were five, we could sufficiently make a system that will make up for the lack of someone. But when we are two, when someone’s desperately singing the other must dance, no buts or ifs. (laughs) There is no time to rest, at all. Especially in concerts, if you look back after preparing about 30-somewhat songs, you’ve really learned a lot and improved a lot.

    Q. Are you still feeling the pressure for being just two.

Uknow Yunho: There are parts that we got fierce, trying to make up for the empty spaces, and there are parts where we got to relax more. It’s half and half. Much things could’ve happened within 1 year and 8 months. The break was long, the trend changes very fast, and we know for sure that we’ve been forgotten a lot from people’s memory. But we don’t want to force it back. As well, there probably are people who don’t like us. Because we are just two, we feel the negative sides a lot more as well. The pressure is doubled. However, we don’t want to package it to be something better. We just want you to see us as we are.

    Q. The fact that it’s half fierce and half relaxation is a look of the transformed TVXQ. What is the biggest change you’re each feeling right now.

Uknow Yunho: In my personal feeling, it feels like we’re give a more grown-up feels since we became a duo. Of course, I like idols too. (laughs) As long as I’m in the age for it I want to do idol music. Although I do think that it’s all the same music regardless of whether something’s idol or not, but if you see it objectively, there’s more masculinity and I like that.
Max Changmin: It seems like we get to focus more on each person than before. It’ll be so for the audience as well, but it’s also like that on our part. The fact that we can look into each one of us in more focused light. That’s the biggest change.

    Q. So what is the colour that TVXQ that is now duo want to show as singers?

Uknow Yunho: I want to be agroup that can try all genres. We like really different music styles. As we, who are so different, are together Changmin could be the main sometimes, and sometimes I could be the main, to show off various colours. I want to hear words like “chameleon-like group”.
Max Changmin: Umm. Yunho hyung’s words are correct, but I think a little differently to be honest. I think saying ‘I want to do something like this’ is a little too arrogant. I’m not opposed to the idea of becoming a ‘chameleon-like group’. (laughs) So it’s like the shear act of saying ‘this is our colour’ could be the idea that puts you into a mannerism. To be honest, we’re still going through lots of trial and error these days, and I think we will continue to experience them. I think we’re still at a stage where were discovering music that we can be good at, and finding things we can show better.

    Q. The current idol market in Korea is starkly different from when TVXQ debuted. How does TVXQ want to remain in this.

Uknow Yunho: We want to remain as always new TVXQ. I think we showed the audience who’re interested in us something a little different every time, in our own way. If we sung cute songs for ‘Hug’, we tried a change in ‘Rising Sun’, and I think we got to show sexiness that was appropriate for our age for ‘Mirotic’ and for ‘Wae’ we had natural changes as a result of the changes we faced then. This album’s what follows next. It seems like we are more experienced now, and as such, we want to try something new again. It’s not easy, but we really want to be an unpredictable group. To be honest, we could go down senselessly. But even still, I want to be an unpredictable person, and I’d like it if TVXQ is like that.

    Q. Any ‘dream’ the two of you have through this activity.

Max Changmin: It seems like I’m more relaxed than before, so I think it’ll be more fun than ever. As well, I hope that the audience feels ‘ah, they’re really enjoying what they do’ by seeing such things from us.
Uknow Yunho: I just want them to see us as we are. Criticisms are fine, and anything’s fine. If they can sense that we’ve tried to seek some change while doing that, nothing could be better. We worried a lot because we wanted to break our own frame as well.

US ABC ‘Kelly Show’ Music Director: “I’m a TVXQ! fan too”

The music director for a famous U.S. morning Talk Show ABC ‘Live! with Kelly & Michael’ turns out to be a TVXQ! fan.

On October 1st, TVXQ!’s new song ‘Catch Me’ was used as an opening song for ‘Live! with Kelly & Michael’. The MCs even showed off dance moves to the chorus of ‘Catch Me’.

This is interesting as ‘Catch Me’ is a new song that hasn’t even started promotion in Korea.

According to ABC, “the music director for the ‘Live! with Kelly & Michael’ heard TVXQ!’s song through itunes and really liked it. So that’s how it got used in the openings. We are glad that the reactions are so good after the show aired.” You can clearly notice a lot of mentions about TVXQ!’s new song on Kelly’s twitter.

[skipped. unnecessary ramble about k-pop and description of the show]

[Trans] TVXQ, when asked how they date…

TVXQ has expressed their honest thoughts about their love life.

TVXQ has recently met up with the press in a hotel in Gangnam, Seoul for the release of new album, ‘Catch Me’.

Uknow Yunho is 27, and Max Changmin is 25. Both are the so-called high-spirited age that should have lots of interest towards the opposite sex. However, as they are the top group for not just Korea but the entire Asia, it is not easy to date.

Uknow Yunho said that “I usually wonder around alone when I have the time. I like spending time on my own and just thinking. Other than that, I hang out with the friends I made before I debuted.” “If I have the opportunity, I am confident about building a really cute relationship though.”

As well, he showed his stuffed heart about not being able to date easily by adding “Once, I wrote a letter thinking what my unmet girl would be dong right now. Thinking that some day, I’ll give her this letter.”

To this, Max Changmin joked that “I thought for like 3 years that maybe that hyung (Uknow Yunho) is gay”. “I always tell the hubaes, what I regret right now is not living my life so cheerfully after I debuted, right in my prime when I was more in spirit. You work, then you get tired so you rest, and then that’s how you don’t get to fall in love. There’s so much difference between someone who’s fallen in love and who hasn’t in terms of how much emotions can be put into a song. I always tell the hubaes. Date secretly. The company won’t arrange marriages for them later.”

Uknow Yunho added that “They say that the badder guy than the bad boy is a busy guy” to give a lot of laughs around.

[Trans] TVXQ is ‘Two better than Three’ possible?

    "Two better than Three"

Choi Ja and Dog Nose, who debuted as ‘CB Mass’ in 2000. They were disbanded in 2003 due to conflicts with the leader and transformed into ‘Dynamic Duo’. The two rappers argued through rap lyrics that “Two is better than Three” and they have finally proved that lyric.

TVXQ!, who has also debuted in the same year as an idol group wen through disbandment of the team as well. And this year, Max Changmin and Uknow Yunho’s second album came out. ‘TVXQ!’ has to become a “Two better than Three” in a slightly different respect than ‘Dynamic Duo’.

TVXQ has transformed from the five soft men who debuted with ‘Hug’ to an intense duo. Can they really become a “Two better then Three”? Let’s figure out the possibility with their new album.

    Title Song ‘Catch Me’

'Catch Me' is an electronic dance song that suits TVXQ!, who's known for intense performance, very well. And most importantly, it's a product of Yoo Young Jin.

Yoo Young Jin has been the producer for singers such as H.O.T., S.E.S., Shinhwa, FlytotheSky, and BoA. Although he’s not directly involved in the recent idols of SM Entertainment such as SHINee and F(x), he’s still the legend of SM. The new title song of TVXQ! that Yoo Young Jin has put much care into. Worth holding expectations for.

<TVXQ! Title Song ‘Catch Me’ lyric>

Max Changmin wrote the lyrics for ‘I Swear’. He said, “It’s been 9 years since debut. The past 3 years has been focused on Japan. When we finally returned to Korea, we were in a state where elementary school students didn’t know us. It’s probably because of that, we’re more thankful to the fans who’re by our side until the very end. We are thankful to them and we are sorry. We meet our 10th year anniversary next year. There definitely will be events to give back to the fans.”

Singing career that began with innocents thoughts of wanting to be on the stage. As with everything else, there are hardships. What’s better about celebrities than other occupations is probably the fact that they have fans.

    <I Swear Lyrics>

Max Changmin has put in his heart for wanting to protect the fans in the lyric. It’s a rightful reward to the fans who held onto TVXQ who went through much hardship. However, the path to the repaying the favor is not so easy.

'TVXQ!' is not an idol group. Uknow Yunho is 26 years old, and Max Changmin is 24 years old. They're just men. Their competitors are not new idol groups. They have to compete against singer sunbaes who are enjoying long successes in various genres.

They can truly protect the fans only after winning this battle. And the way to that victory isn’t changing the album’s concept from ‘Cutie’ to ‘Manry Man’. The time has come for growth into singers, to human, to men.

Unlike other singers who’s been through the underground period, the singers who have been trainees in entertainment companies work a produced image and a produced music very well. However, unlike the underground born singers who grew while connecting with the fans on stage, they’re still living a sheltered life.

'TVXQ!' that has been produced by Yoo Young Jin, and SM has to end with this album. In order for Max Changmin to be 'fan protector' it really has to happen.

    TVXQ!, a closer look (interview)

    Q. Do you like IU because she’s a good singer? Or as a woman.. hehe

"You’re asking an impossible question. IU that we’re thinking of is just a good singer."

    Q. So you’re saying that ‘National Sister’ IU isn’t your type?

"If you write your title like that there’s gonna be a war."(Uknow Yunho)

    Q. Then please tell me a love story.

"There really is no girlfriend. The badder guy than the ‘bad guy’ is the ‘busy guy’. We were really busy."

    Q. Singers you like?

"Do we have to choose from our company? It won’t be so amusing if we answer it…"

    Q. Other than your company hubaes, which group will be the next TVXQ?

"The groups we’re eyeing on these days are teams with musicality. Band teams like CN Blue, and singers who can sing including IU. The expression ‘Next TVXQ’ is too much. We haven’t grown that much yet."

    Q. Scared moments because you were a duo?

"At first we were taken a back, and then we were having a hard time at the idea of doing 25 songs in 2 hours and 30 minutes with just the two of us when we were dong the national tour in Japan. But now, we have gained confidence in the idea that we can sufficiently present good concerts with just the two of us. As fear turned into confidence the two of us grew more."

    Q. Any goals?

"We couldn’t hold concerts in Korea for the past 3 years as we were doing activities in Japan. Even for the Korean fans, we are planning on confirming Korean concert schedules. As well, we’re planning on increasing the size of the concert in Japan that we’ve been holding. Lastly, we want to hold a solo concert in the U.S."

    Q. A new album is out this year. You haven’t appeared on variety shows before. Was there a reason for it?

"The last album was out a year and eight months ago. As the image the album carried was fairly heavy we didn’t think it suited variety, and that’s why we were unsure of appearing on variety shows. But this year, we are going to starr in variety shows. It’s just that we don’t do it, but when we do it, there’s no joke. It’s really hilarious."(Uknow Yunho)

    Q. Lastly, it’s been 9 years since debut. What’s the know-how in that?

"We think to ourselves that we’re the best on stage. It’s actually a delusion. The other groups are also really good. So in order to convince ourselves that we are the best we really have to practice a lot. So in the end, the know-how to long-run is practice."
